I noticed two GoogleDesktop.exe processes for my user name in task
manager (Windows XP Home). I went to Desktop's options to see if I
could disable Desktop automatically starting when Windows starts to
see if there were two separate Desktops trying to run simultaneously
on my Windows XP account - Desktop has been acting up lately as well.
I couldn't find the option to choose if Desktop starts automatically.
I also noticed that the URL wasn't clearly a google.com top level
domain, but a numerical IP address instead.

Here's the IP address that's showing up when I try to change Desktop
preferences:

127.0.0.1

I've searched for this IP address at whatismyipaddress.com and
cqcounter.com/whois (another IP address lookup service), but neither
lookup is coming up with any obvious evidence that would point to the
IP address as being a Google IP address!?

Any ideas out there?

Hi N.B.,

Google Desktop serves search results off of a local webserver on your
computer. When you visit 127.0.0.1, you are visiting a webserver that
is hosted on your own computer. Any requests you make must be on the
same computer, or Google Desktop will not respond. This is what helps
Google Desktop results remain secure - no outside computers can see or
access your results, unless they're logged into your computer with
your username and password.

Your Google Desktop index is located only on your computer.

The IP address you've referenced is normal and shouldn't cause any
need for concern.
